RCB triumph in IPL 2025 opener: Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 59 sparks title hopes

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) commenced their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign with a commanding seven-wicket victory over defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 59 anchored the chase, reinforcing RCB’s aspirations for their maiden IPL title.

Chasing a target of 175, RCB’s innings was propelled by a formidable 95-run opening partnership between Kohli and debutant Phil Salt. Salt’s aggressive 56 off 30 balls set the tone, while Kohli’s steady hand ensured the chase remained on course. Contributions from Rajat Patidar (34) and Liam Livingstone (15 not out) sealed the victory in just 16.2 overs.

Earlier, RCB’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to restrict KKR to 174-8. Australian seamer Josh Hazlewood, returning from injury, showcased his value with figures of 2-22, including 16 dot balls. Spinner Krunal Pandya also played a crucial role, claiming 3-29 and stalling KKR’s momentum during the middle overs.

KKR’s innings featured a brisk 56 from captain Ajinkya Rahane and a quickfire 44 from Sunil Narine. However, the loss of key wickets in the middle overs prevented them from reaching a more competitive total.

This emphatic win not only provides RCB with a positive start to the season but also underscores the team’s balanced composition and readiness to challenge for the title. Kohli’s form, combined with impactful performances from both new and returning players, bodes well for RCB’s campaign ahead.
