Maha Kumbh marks grand culmination today, devotees flock for final Amrit Snan

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025, which commenced on January 13, is concluding today, February 26, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. This grand festival, held at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has witnessed an unprecedented gathering of devotees over the past 45 days.

As of February 24, the Uttar Pradesh government reported that over 633.6 million (63.36 crore) pilgrims have taken the holy dip at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. On February 24 alone, more than 13 million (1.3 crore) devotees participated in the sacred bathing ritual.

The final Amrit Snan, or royal bath, is taking place today on Maha Shivratri, a day revered for its spiritual significance in Hinduism. Devotees believe that bathing at the Sangam on this day purifies the soul and brings blessings from Lord Shiva. The auspicious timings for the Amrit Snan began in the early hours, with rituals continuing throughout the day.

Despite the massive influx of pilgrims, the festival has been marred by some unfortunate incidents. On January 29, a tragic stampede occurred during the Mauni Amavasya Snan, resulting in the loss of at least 30 lives and injuring many others. This incident prompted authorities to intensify crowd control measures and enhance safety protocols to prevent further mishaps.

The state government, leveraging its experience from organizing the smaller 2019 Ardh Kumbh, designated a special administrative district to manage logistics for this event. Preparations included constructing infrastructure over a 40 square kilometer area, enhancing security with 50,000 personnel, and setting up a vast number of temporary facilities for pilgrims. Advanced crowd monitoring with AI-powered cameras was implemented to manage the safety of the attendees.

As the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 draws to a close, the city of Prayagraj continues to resonate with chants and devotional songs. The successful culmination of this event underscores the enduring faith and dedication of millions of devotees who have journeyed from across the country and the world to partake in this once-in-a-lifetime spiritual gathering.
