Madhu Chopra recalls Priyanka’s struggles on Dostana set, says director was ‘scary’

In a recent interview, Dr. Madhu Chopra, mother of global icon Priyanka Chopra, shed light on the challenges her daughter faced during the filming of the 2008 Bollywood hit, Dostana. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the film starred Priyanka alongside Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham.

Dr. Chopra recounted an incident where Priyanka, battling a high fever, was apprehensive about informing the director of her inability to shoot. She requested her mother to convey the message. Upon hearing the news, Mansukhani responded sarcastically, “How convenient.” This remark did not sit well with Dr. Chopra, who retorted, “If you want her to die on your set, I’ll send her. But if something happens to her, you’ll be responsible for it.” Reflecting on the director’s demeanor during that period, Dr. Chopra described him as “a very scary man.”

In the same conversation, veteran journalist Bharathi S. Pradhan highlighted another challenging moment for Priyanka on the Dostana set. Designer Manish Malhotra accidentally sent Priyanka a message intended for producer Karan Johar, expressing relief that it was his last day working with her. The message read, “Thank god it’s my last day with Priyanka.” This inadvertent text left Priyanka in tears. However, she approached Malhotra, seeking clarification, which led to a resolution of their differences. Dr. Chopra noted that this incident, though hurtful, eventually paved the way for a strong friendship between Priyanka and Malhotra.

These revelations underscore the resilience and professionalism Priyanka exhibited early in her career, navigating industry challenges with grace and determination.
